Hybrid wedding imagery

I’m excited to announce a unique addition to my wedding photography menu!

Ok, so… In November I found myself in a helicopter with one of my clients going up into the mountains to capture amazing wedding portraits. Camden Miller was the videographer that also got this unique opportunity. We met at the hanger before the flight and over the course of the next few hours and days, we became friends and ever since we’ve been putting our heads together to create what I call a ‘Montana hybrid imagery’ package.

A couple weeks ago we had our first shot at making this endeavor a reality. It goes like this. Camden and I work together seamlessly to capture both still imagery (that’s my job!) and Camden does his artful work to captures video highlights of the wedding day experience. This wedding took place on a snowy day at the Lone Mountain Ranch in Big Sky. Mother Nature put on a beautiful show of the most serene snowfall for the sleigh ride into the mountains and the wedding ceremony. It was magic!

With the talented drone piloting and video work of Camden, the end result is a full collection of moments captured in still photography and a highlights video for the couple to have to view for a lifetime. It’s really the best of both worlds… Montana Hybrid Imagery.

So take in the show and then see the moments captured as still photos below.

As we walk through this life always… Enjoy the view!

Lone Mountain Ranch wedding

Winter time brings a beautiful white hush to the mountains in our Montana Big Sky country. A scenic mountainous wonderland for downhill, cross country and back country skiing is abundant. Only a few brave couples decide to marry outside during the long months of winter. Those who dare reap the rewards!

Joanna and Andrew made plans in November last year to marry at the scenic Lone Mountain Ranch in Big Sky, Montana. I was excited and pleased to put them on my schedule for an early February wedding. They made plans to marry on the ridge above the lodge with amazing views regardless of the weather or temperature.

Bitter cold days pressed in on our area for a couple of weeks before the wedding. I prepared myself and my gear for the worst. Fortunately there was a magical inversion in the area of the lodge. The temperature in the Bozeman valley below Big Sky hovered around the zero mark, while 2000 feet higher at Lone Mountain Ranch it was an amazing 30 degrees! And OH MY… did it snow. The most luscious snowfall I have seen for awhile. The end result was an amazing winter wonderland wedding in the mountains!

So, please take a couple of minutes and experience the bliss of this ‘marriage at altitude’ in Montana!

Congratulations to Joanna and Andrew! Thanks for finding me…

Portraits, women, yoga and horses

Portrait: A Glimpse of the Soul

Making portraits is very personal to me. There is no crowd of people, nor grand wedding event in the process. In this case, it’s just me and the yogini, a gorgeous horse and our amazing Wranglers, Molly and Henry Glenn. I love the experience, it’s subtle and moving to me on a soul level. Perhaps it’s a lot like yoga for this photographer’s brain and soul.

Today I sat down and reviewed portraits of the ladies of Big Sky Yoga Reteats and Cowgirl Yoga from the last two years. These images made me grateful for my profession, the path that I have both chose and was led to in this life! Spring is right around the corner and I am looking forward to meeting and photographing many new friends!

Enjoy the slideshow!

Lost in the line of duty

A Tribute to those that give… everything.

I was going through some of my work from the past year and I revisited an amazing image. I was shooting for the Benefis Hospital in Great Falls in September. It was late in the evening. I was up about 30 feet in the air on a swaying scissor lift, trying to stay perfectly still while making long exposures of their new hospital addition. A noise caught my ear. It was the sound of helicopter blades in the wind. One of the hospital’s Mercy Flight aircraft rising from behind the building. I picked up my camera, still attached to the tripod and followed it through the air. I got one exposure! “A lucky grab” I thought. Then my mind went back several years when I read the heart saddening story of the crash of one of their Mercy Flights. Pilot, nurse and paramedic, they all died enroute to pickup a patient in Bozeman.

So this is my small way to pay tribute to these folks that didn’t even give it a second thought to put their life on the line for another. They go about their selfless work and nobody really pays much attention except those that have had the benefit of their fine service.

For this I am grateful. I say THANK YOU to these three that gave everything, and many others out there, still hard at work. You’re amazing!

Portraits in Paradise

Saturday, I had the pleasure of shooting with a young lady that left Montana at the young age of 14 to study ballet abroad. She is now an amazing professional ballet dancer who lives in London and performs all over the world.  Maria Sascha Khan, an extraordinary woman and multi talented being!  Maria and I spent a little time on the phone to talk about the vision of the project and agreed on the shoot date. Fortunately when the day came, it was sunny, relatively warm and gorgeous. We started in the Paradise valley and then headed south to visit a ranch in Mill Creek. The final location was a little school house near the border of Yellowstone Park where she attended grade school. The final images were taken in the last few moments of light on the porch of the school, now the home of a kind couple that allowed us to make photos on their property.

It was a wonderful experience. Such a treat!  And, my applause and many thanks to Maria’s mother Teresa Khan MacKay who brought her styling skills and intuition to the table and younger brother Master Nicholas MacKay for all the support, creative input and moving image capture.  Such a great team.  I hope to work with them all again soon.

enjoy the view!

Nicholas shot video and stills and was an excellent creative co-director

Hannah and Greg’s Winter wedding in Bozeman

Ok, so… this wedding day was really cold! … and oh what a gorgeous day it was. The temperature was around zero in the sun and at sunset it was 6 degrees below zero!   Needless to say we worked fast and there was no time for doddling!

This is a ‘sneak peak’ of just a few images from the wedding day.  Hannah and Greg, I hope you are having a warm and wonderful time on your honey moon.  I bet Spain is a lot warmer than your wedding day!!!

Cheer’s Larry
