Rainbow Ranch Wedding : Toni and Rance

Toni and Rance were married recently at this Rainbow Ranch Wedding. It was a stellar experience. The high mountain valley of Big Sky provided the drama and beauty of a June day with all of the possible weather surprises. And then at the last minute the sun shown on this couple and their families with the most beautiful array of light, mist, puffy clouds, deep blue sky and sunshine. They got it all, everything, the whole show!!! And, I was honored to be the witness with camera in hand.

Over the past 13 years I have enjoyed a very special place to work, usually once or twice a year. In the earlier years it was along side of one of the owners and my good friend Patrick Hurd. But as life evolves, Patrick moved on and sold his interest in this very special place. At that time I wondered what would become of this gem in the mountain valley of Big Sky, the Rainbow Ranch. If you have visited, stayed there or attended a wedding there… you know where of I speak. The Rainbow Ranch is today, and has always been a GEM in the heart of Big Sky, Montana. Life’s changes brought a wonderful woman into this place and she would shoulder the job of being the front person, the hostess of such a gracious and amazing place. A place that welcomes people from all over the world and envelopes them in the warmth of our Montana hospitality. Mollie Eckman is the fine hostess and General Manager of this magical place.

The images that I share here are witness to this place and the fine work that Mollie and her staff perform, week after week, selflessly helping all of their guests experience the magic that is in this place we call home… Montana. Cheers to the Rainbow Ranch, Mollie Eckman and the standard of excellence that they maintain.

btw… the boys dropped their drawers to get into the river! smiles. There was some moonlight in the middle of the day.

A big time in Big Sky

Ok, so… ever think life is boring, bland, simple and uninteresting??? I beg to differ.

Here are some images of an amazing wedding that I shot last Saturday… and it reminded me of how wonderful and diverse and beautiful our lives truly are. This was a big wedding, a big time in Big Sky. They packed the Big Sky Chapel with wonderful folks from all over Montana and beyond. The full Catholic Mass was beautiful in every detail. The priest opened his heart to all those present and when the vows were made and the rings exchanged, thank God for the amazing light he shown into the chapel, it was quite auspicious!

Of course where there are families, there are children and they were very much a part of this event as you will see in the photos. Thanks to the 320 Guest Ranch for their impeccable hospitality, to Joe’s DJ for great coordination and music, to my friend Merissa Lambert for her excellent second shooting and moral support. I wish I knew who did the beautiful flowers… I would love to tell you.

Springtime in the Rockies – Montana weddings

I love springtime in the Rockies, especially the mountains in my own back yard! Yesterday afternoon I photographed with Audrey and Micah. Oh God these two are smitten! Their wedding will be right here in the Paradise Valley in the foothills above. How sweet it is!

The doggie companions are a dad and daughter pair. The puppy keeps the old guy on his toes as you will see. It was a great hour of shooting. I am so ready for my summer weddings to begin.

Big Sky wedding : from behind the camera

Mike and Hannah married at the 320 Ranch last August. They titled their wedding “The Legends of the West Wedding” at the 320 Guest Ranch. Moments matter

Ok, so… moments matter. I’ve been in this mode lately of evaluating what is authentic to me and what is not. And of course this rolls over into my everyday job of working with all kinds of images, the majority of which are of weddings. Today I was going over a Big Sky wedding at the Rainbow Ranch Lodge from last spring preparing some images for publication. Authentic moments have been jumping out at me. Moments are fleeting and are existent only for a very brief period of time.

Years ago one of my great mentors told me this: that albeit brief, each moment has a beginning, a middle and an end. And also that in between the end of each moment and the beginning of the next there is this little tiny space. This really set me to thinking. Wow!!! even a brief moment has a beginning, a middle and an end! As I contemplated this I found myself looking for those spaces between moments when I was photographing. Little spaces when my subject was in-between moments and not presenting something to me. Ah ha… maybe I could see and capture something of their real self, something that was more authentic than the human nature of presenting a ‘front’ like a protective shield identity. Yeah, I know it’s pretty ‘out there’, BUT… I think there is something to it.

Here are a collection of images from that wedding that tell me something about moments, and how MOMENTS MATTER. Some are lighthearted, some are quiet, others emotional and some are just down right sweet. Enjoy!
