What does a Wedding Photographer do, during the winter in Montana?
I guess it's a fair question if you don't live here. I've been asked that several times recently, while speaking to my 2007 couples. It must be in the "Questions to ask your wedding photographer" book, or on the Knot. First of all, the skiing is fantastic. But I think they meant... for photography work. Secondly, if you up-keep a website of any type, you know how much work it is to keep it fresh and interesting, and oh yeah, did I mention how much time it takes publish a new site???
Back to the real answer: I photograph people, other than people in weddings. My most recent ongoing assignment has been for The Hughes Agency in St. Louis, MO. I've been shooting a series of Ads for The Benefis Hospital and The Sletten Cancer Institute in Great Falls, MT. Check out the ads. I think you'll see my style in the advertising work.
People in Advertising PortfolioI have heard the opinion that a "real" wedding photographer is one that only shoots weddings. Poppycock! I couldn't disagree more. Ok, well I guess if a photographer only shot a handful of weddings during the year and the rest of the time he shot food, or products or something completely different... it might be a valid concern.
Personally, I believe that the more a photographer applies himself to creatively shooting, pushing his limits, expanding his skill levels, regardless of the subject - the better photographer he will become. I shoot about 25 weddings each summer and I am completely equipped with back ups of everything and enough lighting gear for just about any Ad shoot. When I get the opportunity to shoot advertising, it's a piece of cake! There are never more than a handfull of people involved and you work on each shot until you've got it. Much different than producing great results on the fly during someone's most important day .
So, that's my comment on that. Smile. Enjoy the images.
