The Frontier House wedding of Nate and Kristen Brooks

"It was as if I grabbed my camera bag and was transported back over a century and returned with film in hand."

April 29th PBS aired Frontier House. A series created in a remote area of Montana where three families relived the homestead experience of 1883.

A photo editor for TV Guide was looking for a photographer in Montana to cover this very special occasion. She was searching the Internet for a photographer with an eye for the timeless nature of the wedding ritual and someone who could shoot comfortably around a multi-camera PBS film crew. After her review of my online portfolio and several conversations on the phone, I was hired by TV guide to photograph the wedding of Nate Brooks and Kristen McLeod that was to take place during the filming of this series.

I was met by Debra Falk the publicist for WNET and Eliza Bergman Krause writer for TV Guide at the Murray Hotel in Livingston, Montana where they had spent the night before the wedding. After signing an agreement to keep this grand project a secret, we set off to discover this covert settlement of pioneers.

After 2 hours of back country roads through the mountains we arrived to find that everyone in attendance was in period dress which made those of us filming feel almost out of place. But that was about to change. What evolved that day was a remarkable melding of era's that took all of us (regardless of the style of our clothing) back to another time.

The bride arrived in a horse drawn carriage splashing across the stream bed and into the meadow. She stepped down on to the grassy field over a hundred yards from the hand crafted wedding venue. The airy notes of the old bellows pipe organ filled the hallowed space as she took her father's arm and walked down this scenic aisle. Time was folded as we went back to 1883. Emotions ran high after 7 weeks of separation; Nate met Kristen with a tearful embrace. Looking into the congregation, eyes were filled with tears and hearts were thrilled with this love that was traversing time.

Magically, on July 4th, 2001 there was a linking of hearts between the pioneer homesteaders of 1883 and this small gathering of souls celebrating Nate and Kristen's wedding day. It was an event that I will not soon forget. A special Thank You to Kristen and Nate for sharing this day with all of us.
